Our New First Presidency

On Monday at 1 pm I turned on BYUTV and watched the brethren file in to the press conference room. I recognized President Monson. I recognized President Eyring. The third man I didn’t recognize. It was only after they put his name on the screen did I realize that it was Dieter F. Uchtdorf. Then I recognized him.

The press secretary announced that the day before President Monson had been ordained the president of our church. That was no surprise. He was the senior apostle and in the past the senior apostle has always moved up to the spot of president. It was also no surprise that President Eyring would be his first counselor. He had become the second counselor in August after President Faust died. It was somewhat of a surprise at the time that he was to be the new counselor, but only because he has not been an apostle nearly as long as many of the others.

The new second counselor was President Uchtdorf. That was initially a surprise, but it makes perfect sense that he is who the Lord wants in that position at this time. He is relatively young, just 67. He has only been in the quorum of the twelve since 2004 and, like President Eyring, that has not been nearly as long as many others. Our church is a worldwide church. More than half of our members live outside of the United States. President Uchtdorf lived in Europe most of his life.

Henry B. Eyring, Thomas S. Monson, Dieter F. Uchtdorf
