History: The Pacific Peoples
Week 30 of school we learned about the Pacific Peoples using Layers of Learning, year 2 unit 17.
We did mapwork.
We added to our timeline.
We made a lapita pottery coil pot.
We made a model of an outrigger canoe.
We drew pictures of an island forming on a turtle’s back.
Geography: Micronesia
Week 30 of school we learned about Micronesia using Layers of Learning, year 2 unit 17. Cameron didn’t join us that day since he was sick.
We found Micronesia on the map.
We did mapwork.
We found other archipelagos.
We drew and named our own archipelagos.
We made rai stones out of clay.
We made paper doll families.
We had a Micronesian feast for dinner. We had marinated grilled chicken and rice, noodles, taro and plantain curry, and mashed sweet potatoes cooked in coconut milk.

The Arts: Asian Arts
Weeks 28 and 29 of school we learned about Asian arts using Layers of Learning, year 2 unit 16.
We read The Seven Chinese Brothers as a reader’s theater.
We made rubbings of surfaces.
We made origami paper cranes.
We made an elephant parade.
We did paper cutting.
We made kimonos for spoon dolls.
We made a moon lantern.
We made paintings based on The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai.
Science: Electricity
Weeks 28 and 29 of school we learned about electricity using Layers of Learning, year 2 unit 16.
We tried to make electricity using nickels, foil, and salted vinegar soaked paper towels. It didn’t work at all. It was one of the few failed experiments of the year.
We played with static electricity.
The staticy balloon attracted the strings.
Two staticy balloons repelled each other.
The boys gave oral reports on Faraday, Ohm, and Volta.
We made a little current by putting penny and a quarter in a lemon. When we licked it, it stung our tongues just a little.
We watched a Schoolhouse Rock video about electricity.
Geography: China
Weeks 28 and 29 of school we learned about China using Layers of Learning, year 2 unit 16.
We did mapwork.
We made paper lanterns.
We watched a tutorial on calligraphy.
And then we tried writing in calligraphy.
We decorated a Chinese character.
We made a Chinese dragon puppet.
We played two-player Tangoes.
And then we all solved a big Tangoes puzzle together.
We learned about the Chinese Zodiac.
We went on a field trip to a park and used the exercise equipment spread along the path.
