Science: Sound
Week 10 of school we learned about sound using Layers of Learning, year 3 unit 6.
We played bottles with different levels of water in them.
We discovered how hard it is to determine where a sound comes from when blindfolded and with one ear plugged.
We watched some YouTube videos.
We used a cup, string, and a tiny wet piece of cloth and made a clucking machine (though we all had different opinions on the sound it made).
We demonstrated how sound travels through solid objects like the dining room table.
Geography: Spain
Week 10 of school we learned about Spain using Layers of Learning, year 3 unit 6.
We found Spain on the big wall map.
We did mapwork.
We watched lots of YouTube videos.
We reenacted the running of the bulls with Fritz and Adrian as bulls chasing Cameron.
History: Thirty Year’s War
Week 10 of school we learned about the Thirty Year’s War using Layers of Learning, year 3 unit 6.
We added to our timeline.
We did mapwork.
We defenestrated Adrian.
We made a poster of Europe at the beginning of the war and who was on which side (Protestant vs. Catholic).
We watched a YouTube video about The Lion of the North.
We colored a map of Europe in 1648.
The Arts: Shakespeare
Weeks 8 and 9 of school we learned about Shakespeare using Layers of Learning, year 3 unit 5. The first week Cameron wasn’t with us because he was being the PE teacher for the day at a local elementary school.
We learned about the rhyme scheme of sonnets.
We watched a YouTube video about the Globe Theater.
We acted out some epic Shakespearean death scenes.
Science: Mammals
Weeks 8 and 9 of school we learned about mammals using Layers of Learning, year 3 unit 5. The first week Cameron wasn’t with us because he was being the PE teacher for the day at a local elementary school.
Fritz picked sheep and Adrian picked moose and they wrote factual reports about their animals and then wrote fictional stories starring their animal. They did a great job with them!
We learned about dog anatomy with a little help from Lola.
We learned the life cycle of a mouse.
We watched a YouTube video about echolocation.
We watched a YouTube video about mammals.
We did some experiments with Lola and her treats to see if she could learn where they were even if there was something unexpected about the location. She scored 23/27 and definitely demonstrated that she learned from the first to subsequent trials.
We watched the Naked Mole Rap because why not.
We sorted animals into categories based on whether they were placental mammals, marsupials, or monotremes.
We compared Lola’s and Adrian’s respiration rates while at rest and after exercise.
Fritz, my mom, and I dissected a fetal pig. The other two boys opted out. It was fascinating and super cool.

We made pictures in the style of Kanga cloth.
History: Renaissance England
Weeks 8 and 9 of school we learned about Renaissance England using Layers of Learning, year 3 unit 5.
We added to our timeline.
We watched YouTube videos of Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Walter Raleigh.
We made spoon people of Queen Elizabeth I and others in her life.
We learned about the Spanish Armada.
We learned about how the British Parliament is set up today.
We learned about Roundheads and Cavaliers.
We watched a YouTube video about the Great Fire of London.
We learned about the Gunpowder Plot and made an effigy of Guy Fawkes.
And then we went outside and burned it. I do wonder what our neighbor thought when he came out to his truck to leave to go somewhere and saw the six of us (my parents joined us for the burning) standing around this thing being burned in the middle of the street. But we were, you know, remembering the Fifth of November (a little early).
The Arts: Reformation Art
Week 7 of school we learned about Reformation art using Layers of Learning, year 3 unit 4.
We compared Reformation and Counter-Reformation art.
We watched a video explaining a work of Reformation art.
We made prints.
We discussed The Blind Leading the Blind by Pieter Brueghel the Elder.
