Science: Sedimentary Rocks

Weeks 18 and 19 of school we learned about sedimentary rocks using Layers of Learning, year 3 unit 12.

We watched YouTube videos about sedimentary rocks.
sedimentary1

We let a piece of chalk soak in water and checked its weight every 5 minutes. In 15 minutes, it gained 2 grams. This showed us that some rocks can absorb water.
sedimentary2

We mixed sand with epsom salts dissolved in water and left it in the window that gets the most sun for a week to turn it into a rock (we weren’t sure it would work because we were in the middle of several very cloudy days that week).
sedimentary3

It worked!
sedimentary7

We demonstrated how layers of sediment separate.
sedimentary4

We dissolved some chalk in vinegar.
sedimentary5

We identified sedimentary rocks.
sedimentary6

We learned how a surface coal mine works.

The Arts: Creative Kids

Week 17 of school we did a creative kids unit using Layers of Learning, year 3 unit 11. Cameron didn’t join us because he had a work meeting he needed to attend. That was our last one week unit of the school year.

The boys chose to design a dream backyard
creative1

It involved a giant seesaw and a swing with a chain as long as you want it.
creative2

Adrian insisted on including a food stand that gives you any food you want, even foods that don’t exist.
creative3

Sounds like a pretty awesome backyard to me!

A little vacation

We decided to get away for a little vacation the week before Christmas (and before the government shutdown meaning we have no idea when Jamie’s going to get paid for the work he’s been doing as he’s essential). We took the little guys and headed to Corpus Christi. We had a fabulous time!

corpus10

I taught Fritz how to successfully get the basketball in the basket most of the times he tried.

On the way home, the boys were fascinated by the rest stop we stopped at. Adrian found a compass on the floor and just had to stand on it and point toward the north.
