Weeks 28 and 29 of school we learned about more (chemical) reactions using Layers of Learning, year 3 unit 17.
We played with pH papers. Fritz especially had a good time with that.
We watched tons of YouTube videos (including one of Cameron doing the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment almost a decade ago).
We put glow sticks in hot and cold water and then let them sit for a while. The one in cold water didn’t glow as brightly, but the one in hot water didn’t glow as long.
We put Alka Seltzer in water and watched how the temperature changed. It went from 72* to 64* in less than a minute.
We mixed baking soda and vinegar and timed how long the reaction continued while stirring and while not stirring. It took 8 minutes for the reaction to end when we let it sit, but less than a minute when we stirred it.
We did the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment. The fountain it made was impressive.
We mixed diced potato and diced liver with hydrogen peroxide to see which contained more catalase. The result: Definitely the liver!
