We completed the third quarter of the 2018-19 school year last Friday. We learned so much this quarter.

In history, we learned about the Boston Tea Party, the founding fathers, 1776, and the American Revolution. In Geography, we learned about Japan, Iran, Samoa, Tonga, and South Africa. In Science we learned about chemical reactions, compounds, oxidation and reduction, and acids and bases. In the arts, we learned about folk music, Rococo art, and crafts. As always, we started each day by watching CNN 10.

In Science we learned about sound, light, history of science, igneous rocks, and sedimentary rocks. In the arts, we learned about Baroque music, Baroque art, art journaling, watercolors, creativity, and Native American art. As always, we started every day by watching CNN 10.

In history, we learned about medieval China and Japan, Pacific peoples, American peoples, the Renaissance, and explorers. In Geography, we learned about China, Micronesia, Canada, Italy, and the Caribbean Sea. In Science, we learned about electricity, circuits, technology, magnetism, and motors. In the arts, we learned about Asian arts, Pacific Island arts, Indian legends, and Renaissance art. We started every day by watching CNN 10 and then working on grammar and spelling using The Nose Tree.

Cameron learned about more elements of poetry. He read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Kula Keiki Ali’i, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West, The Feud that Sparked the Renaissance, and Columbus: Lies of a New World. He continued learning about personal finance both at home and in a weekly class at church. His grades were great:

Fritz learned more logical fallacies and made a reference lapbook of all 28 fallacies he learned this year that he’ll be able to use in his further studies next year. He learned more Latin vocabulary and has done a whole lot of translating. He continued working on learning to play the piano and improving his drawing skills. He wrote several essays about short stories and completed the year by writing a much longer research report. He read Chinese Fairy Tales, Ancient China, Call It Courage, Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison, The Second Mrs. Gioconda, and Where Do you Think You’re Going Christopher Columbus? In math, he continued preparing for pre-algebra and did a whole unit on statistics. Along with his little brother, he completed studying the Book of Mormon. He also finished reading the actual Book of Mormon on his own. He started learning how to code and has made quite a few little games in Scratch. His grades were excellent:

In the arts, we learned about minstrels and plays, printmaking, textiles, using vivid language, and poetry. We started every day by watching CNN 10 and then working on grammar and spelling using The Nose Tree.

In Geography, we learned about France, Nigeria, Germany, the Balkans, and Switzerland. In Science, we learned about planets, stars, earth and moon, satellites, and humans in space. In the arts, we covered Carolingian art, the Canterbury Tales, Gothic art, religious art, and oil paints. We started every day by watching CNN 10 and then working on grammar and spelling using The Nose Tree.

Cameron finished learning the basics of fiction writing and wrote a short story. He started working on writing poetry. He read The Origins of Everything in 100 Pages (more or less), Wulf the Saxon, Will in Scarlet, God’s Battalions: The Case for the Crusades, and God’s Jury: The Inquisition and the Making of the Modern World. He continued learning about personal finance and opened an investment accounts. His grades were excellent:

In Science, we learned about climate and seasons, forecasting, clouds and precipitation, special weather effects, wild weather, and started learning about planets. In the arts, we covered Byzantine art, the illumination, making a commercial, Viking art, King Arthur Tales, and started learning about Carolingian art. We started every day by watching CNN 10 and then working on grammar and spelling using The Nose Tree.

Cameron created characters, scenes, and dialogue in creative writing in preparation for writing a short story. He read Lost to the West, Beowulf: A New Telling, Prince: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia, Viking Warrior, The Legend of King Arthur, and half of The Origins of Everything in 100 Pages (more or less). He worked on learning Spanish, playing the piano, and personal finance. His grades were excellent:
