2020-21 Final Quarter Grades

The kids did awesome this school year. Fritz and Adrian worked hard their final quarter of the year and definitely didn’t slack off at all. Zeke and Mayci learned so much in pre-k and kindergarten. We’re so proud of all of them.

Zeke got 3s in music, 4s in PE (I didn’t even know 4 was an option), 2s and 3s in conduct, 2’s and a 3 in language arts, 3’s, a few 2s, a couple 1s, and a 4 in reading, 2s and 3s in math, 3s in social studies, 2s and 3s in science, and a 3 in health. He can count aloud to 39.

Mayci got 4s in PE (and still has the little crush on her PE teacher that started the very first week of school), 3s in language arts, 2s and 3s in reading, 3s plus a 5 (didn’t know that was an option either) in math, 3s in science and social studies, 2s and 3s in conduct, and 3s in fine arts and technology. She can identify all 26 upper and lowercase letters as well as tell you the sound each one makes, can count aloud up to 29 and can count 20 objects.

We completed the third quarter of the 2018-19 school year last Friday. We learned so much this quarter.

In history, we learned about the Boston Tea Party, the founding fathers, 1776, and the American Revolution. In Geography, we learned about Japan, Iran, Samoa, Tonga, and South Africa. In Science we learned about chemical reactions, compounds, oxidation and reduction, and acids and bases. In the arts, we learned about folk music, Rococo art, and crafts. As always, we started each day by watching CNN 10.

Third Quarter Done!

We completed the third quarter of the 2018-19 school year last Friday. We learned so much this quarter.

Quarter 2 Done!

We completed the second quarter of the 2018-19 school year on the 18th of January. We learned all sorts of great stuff this quarter.

In history, we learned about the Thirty Years’ War, the Dutch, France, the enlightenment, Russia and Prussia, conquistadors, and settlers. In Geography, we learned about Spain, Netherlands, Indonesia, Korea, central Asia, the Baltic states, Peru, and Bolivia. In Science we learned about sound, light, history of science, igneous rocks, and sedimentary rocks. In the arts, we learned about Baroque music, Baroque art, art journaling, watercolors, creativity, and Native American art. As always, we started every day by watching CNN 10.

2017-18 School Year is Done!

We finished the 2017-18 school year on May 25th. This has been an amazing year. We learned so much all year and the fourth quarter was no exception.

In history, we learned about medieval China and Japan, Pacific peoples, American peoples, the Renaissance, and explorers. In Geography, we learned about China, Micronesia, Canada, Italy, and the Caribbean Sea. In Science, we learned about electricity, circuits, technology, magnetism, and motors. In the arts, we learned about Asian arts, Pacific Island arts, Indian legends, and Renaissance art. We started every day by watching CNN 10 and then working on grammar and spelling using The Nose Tree.

Cameron learned about more elements of poetry. He read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Kula Keiki Ali’i, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West, The Feud that Sparked the Renaissance, and Columbus: Lies of a New World. He continued learning about personal finance both at home and in a weekly class at church. His grades were great:

Fritz learned more logical fallacies and made a reference lapbook of all 28 fallacies he learned this year that he’ll be able to use in his further studies next year. He learned more Latin vocabulary and has done a whole lot of translating. He continued working on learning to play the piano and improving his drawing skills. He wrote several essays about short stories and completed the year by writing a much longer research report. He read Chinese Fairy Tales, Ancient China, Call It Courage, Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison, The Second Mrs. Gioconda, and Where Do you Think You’re Going Christopher Columbus? In math, he continued preparing for pre-algebra and did a whole unit on statistics. Along with his little brother, he completed studying the Book of Mormon. He also finished reading the actual Book of Mormon on his own. He started learning how to code and has made quite a few little games in Scratch. His grades were excellent:

Adrian narrated several of passages from books. He read Night of the Ninjas, Ninjas and Samurai, High Tide in Hawaii, If You Lived With the Indians of the Northwest Coast, Along Came Galileo, and You Wouldn’t Want To Sail With Christopher. He continued learning to play the piano and to speak Spanish. He started learning about decimals and changing to fractions to decimals and back again. His grades were excellent:

We finished the third quarter of the 2017-18 school year at the end of March. We learned so much this quarter.

In history, we learned about the War of the Roses, Eastern Europe, African Kingdoms, Asian Kingdoms, and the Mongols. In Geography, we learned about Russia, Hungary, Mali, southeast Asia, and the Caucasus region. In Science, we learned about health, metals, carbon chemistry, non-metals, and radioactivity and salts. In the arts, we learned about minstrels and plays, printmaking, textiles, using vivid language, and poetry. We started every day by watching CNN 10 and then working on grammar and spelling using The Nose Tree.

In math, he continued preparing for pre-algebra. Along with his little brother, he went through Mosiah in the Book of Mormon. He is almost done through 3 Nephi reading it on his own. Second Quarter Done

On Friday we finished the second quarter of the 2017-18 school year. We learned so much in the second 9 weeks. We love Layers of Learning. It’s the perfect combination of hands-on and lecture.

In history, we learned about Charlemagne, the Normans, the Feudal System, the Crusades, and Burgundy, Venice, and Spain. In Geography, we learned about France, Nigeria, Germany, the Balkans, and Switzerland. In Science, we learned about planets, stars, earth and moon, satellites, and humans in space. In the arts, we covered Carolingian art, the Canterbury Tales, Gothic art, religious art, and oil paints. We started every day by watching CNN 10 and then working on grammar and spelling using The Nose Tree.

Cameron finished learning the basics of fiction writing and wrote a short story. He started working on writing poetry. He read The Origins of Everything in 100 Pages (more or less), Wulf the Saxon, Will in Scarlet, God’s Battalions: The Case for the Crusades, and God’s Jury: The Inquisition and the Making of the Modern World. He continued learning about personal finance and opened an investment accounts. His grades were excellent:

First Quarter Done

On Friday we completed the first quarter of the 2017-18 school year. We learned tons in those first 9 weeks thanks to Layers of Learning.

In history, we learned about the Byzantines, barbarians, Islam, Vikings, Anglo Saxons, and started learning about Charlemagne. In Geography, we learned about Turkey, Ireland, the Arabian Peninsula, Norway, Britain, and started learning about France. In Science, we learned about climate and seasons, forecasting, clouds and precipitation, special weather effects, wild weather, and started learning about planets. In the arts, we covered Byzantine art, the illumination, making a commercial, Viking art, King Arthur Tales, and started learning about Carolingian art. We started every day by watching CNN 10 and then working on grammar and spelling using The Nose Tree.

First Quarter Done

Cameron created characters, scenes, and dialogue in creative writing in preparation for writing a short story. He read Lost to the West, Beowulf: A New Telling, Prince: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia, Viking Warrior, The Legend of King Arthur, and half of The Origins of Everything in 100 Pages (more or less). He worked on learning Spanish, playing the piano, and personal finance. His grades were excellent:

Along with his little brother, he did 1 and 2 Nephi in the Book of Mormon. His grades were also excellent:

He read The Hungry Coat, The Railway Children, The Year at Maple Hill Farm, Stories of Beowulf Told to Children, The Hundredth Name, Clouds, Viking Ships at Sunrise, Pink Snow and Other Weird Weather, Vikings, The Rainbow and You, Who in the World Was the Unready King?, and half of Stories of Roland Told to the Children. He began learning to play the piano and to speak Spanish. He is learning how to multiply multiple digits by multiple digits (which he likes to do in his head!). His grades, like his brothers’, were excellent:
